The procedure isn't really terribly expensive, although technically they are supposed to capture the old coolant and send it to a recylcing center... which is why some places will claim that it costs them a billlion collars and thats why they charge you a billion and a half.
In reality, they do this job hundreds of times a year or more, so what they charge more than covers the expense. But... some places will still rip you off.
Shop around, like Ren said, and you'll find somewhere that'll do it cheap.
I had it done in my '90 and the AC is really nice now.
It's not really all that super-cold (although it's plenty cold imo) but the nicest difference is that it get's cold right away.
Plus its green, if that sort of thing floats your boat =P
