Weird Rust by VIN plate

Hehe ... I noticed that Cyril has the same problem as I do. Rust on the INSIDE by the VIN plate. I thought it was due to some spilled water in there by the PO ... but I noticed this morning since it was cold, that there was some ice crystals on the inside.

I don't know what to do about this. The only way to get at it would be to remove the windshield and I'm not gonna do that. I was thinking of wedging a clothe in there every once in awhile to soak up the water. This sux.

I have the same problem, I think it could be from an old seal on the windshield, the only fix is a new one. It caould also be from teh sunroof leaking into the front. Sucks I know.

most 86's have it and there's nothing you can do. tis not old seals or cracks in the body or windshield. its the condensation that builds up in that little corner thats casuing the steel vin plate to rust.

its not going to harm the car as nothing else there is metal.

the only way to prevent it, is if you can pray to mother nature and command her to only breath dry arrid winds over our metropolis.

Why not........

Why not put a little white grease there?
Just to stop any further rusting.

Did you ever take your center console out?
The metal undeneath my center console has spot rust all over so does my dash frame
what's up with that?
I guess that where the saying "rust from the inside out" comes from

actually , there is another way to prevent it:

move your a.ss out of humid freakin' ontario!

my red car, which was from alberta, had no rust there whatsoever, and no rust on the metal headliner retaining plate along the top of the windshield either..

oh well..

Mine doesnt' have a sunroof so I don't have those problems. But it can't just be from condensation ... that's gotta be a leak. I saw rather large ice crystals there ... and when I drove away they all melted.

Weird, my two-tone coupe was originally bought in Ontario and it didn't have that rust spot. Neither does my hatchback that came all the way from Nova Scotia, which even more weird. Just take a thin straw and dip the tip into some rust proofing oil then use the straw dab the area around the dash VIN if you're worried. An even better fix would be to go to the junkyard and get a SR5 dash VIN so you can pay SR5 insurance!

it is from condensation. it occurs from humid/hot days and cool nights. there's always condensation occuring. you don't need a sunroof for that to happen.

everything steel WILL rust. rust is the cause of oxidization, not from water! water accelerates oxidization/rusting because there's double the oxygen attoms (2 "O's"). just like if you were to heat steel...that accelerates rusting because of the amount and density of oxygen atoms.

the VINS already have a slight film over it. however, that slight film is just that...slight. once it wears out (due to cleaning products and natural wear) the metal is exposed more.

feel very lucy if your's hasn't coroded yet.

Take off the metal trim at the base of the windshield and you will find more rust, the glass seal is where your problem started.

THat doesn't sound altogether easy to do. Doesn't that metal trim go all the way from A pillar to A pillar.

Think it's bad just to leave it? Other than looking bad.

it maybe have been a glass seal problem, but the condensation theory is probably most correct.. almost ALL ae86's in ontario have that.. and I kind of doubt all these ae86's just happened to have bad windshield seals.. it also happens on the metal headliner retainer along the top of the windshield.. its is probably also partly becasue they used really thin, cheap metal there
