No, its not needed by any means, but most people would say you will never really see what the capabilities of the speaker is unless its running a little bit of power.

It's still going to sound better then the stocks most likely, it will just sound much better with an amp most of the time. Also, huge bass isn't really seen in 4" speakers so much. But you may notice better mid-bass with a different speaker vs stock.
