The two nickel smelters in Sudbury put in acid plants years ago which convert the SO2 into sulphuric acid or liquid SO2. The liquid SO2 keeps your apples fresh. The high stacks are still there but very little SO2 gets out. The vegetation has grown back around Sudbury at a remarkable rate since the acid plants went in.
