The way I see though, is even if he chose the DVD driven GPS system. That DVD drive will be spinning just as much as an HD would be when it needs to access the info on the disk. I think, when comparing wear and tear of moving parts, they are both on the same level of risk. Just my opinion though.

You have a good point. Let's hope the newer technology keeps the HD last longer.
