hey i wish i could help you. if you want to check the ball joints heres how i do it. jack the car up just far enough for you to get something under the front tires. with it up in the air grab a buddy or someone to help you out and move the wheel up and down, if there is movement in the ball joints they are bad. but i have the same noise starting on my car, so we will see what it is.

And i have you beat. since i have had my car, which i traded my truck for. i have had to put in a distributor, and now i have a blown head gasket and a cracked head.

good luck

Sway Bar

Lil GTR,

I had the same problem on different vehicles. It turned out to be worn sway bar links. There is a kit to fix them that runs about $65 aftermarket. I looked yours up on Autozone.com. They are pretty common. I had a problem with a Chrysler Sebring. I did the same thing. Replaced the struts only to find the clunk was still there. Checked the ball joints, tie rods, etc. My brother had the same problem on a Buick Riviera too. That was the same thing.

They are usually pretty easy to replace but I have never done a Celica. The Sebring was a big PITA. I had to use an air cut off tool to get them out. The Riviera was a piece of cake.

You can also check your ball joints by yourself by jacking the car up just high enough to get a pry bar under the wheels. Then place the pry under the wheel and pry up and down and feel for any play. They usually don't clunk like the links would though so that would be my first guess. If you have help, then one person can look underneath while the other does the prying.

If the links are really bad you can see the wear either in the bushings or the link itself. If they are not that bad then you really can't see it until you take them out.

Good Luck!

sway bar bushings. Could even be a broken sway bar link, should be visible. It won't kill your car, but it's good to fix. Had this happen in quite a few of my cars (because I drive stupid)

get the wheels off the ground and grab each one at 3;00 and 9;00, oclock and see if you have any looseness or play when turning it slightly to right or left turn
