hello all. I recently purchased a used toyota celica and there is this really unhealthy noise that seems to be coming from the drivetrain. the sound is most pronounced when the car is in 2nd or 3rd gear above 2500rpm or so. when I press the clutch in, the sound disappears. I can also hear the sound when I am accelerating, although it is not as bad.
I took in into the local toyota dealer and they checked it out. after doing the road test and all that, they called some national toyota repair hotline (that is controlled by Toyota) and were told that the transmission is just loud because it needs to be beefy because of the "high output engine" in the gts.
The dealership ended up changing the transmission oil, which seems to have made the sound better... but it is still there.
The sound does not seem anywhere near normal to me and my limited experience. What I am wondering is do other people seem to have this similar unhealthy/vibration sort of noise? is it normal or is it a problem with my car?
Hello, Im taking an ASE course now, but im still far a noob, the only thing i can say is the 2 and 3rd gear synchronizers, it usually disappears and is actually hard to diagnose, so it can get mistakened for something else. And the reason why it disappears is its becuase your synchronizers engaged into the gear after the first few 1000's range of RPMS. Its locked in place already so teeth on it arent moving already. Hmm, We studied trans yesterday, but thats my best guess. Also, synchronizers go bad on manuals pretty common depending how its driven.
Hi there. I have 2000 GT-S, bought it used as well back in '03. I think I have the same problem you're having. Is it like a loud rattling sound? I hear this when accelerating, or if I stay at say 1500 RPM or so, and disappears when I go above 5000 RPM. This is in any gear for me, and I've also taken her into Toyota and they totally brushed me off like they did you. When I bought the car, Toyota replaced the tranny and clutch for me, so those were brand new from '03. After they replaced the tranny and clutch, I babied it for a while, making sure I broke it in okay. BUT, the sound was still there, and still is to this day. I've taken it to a couple mechanics but they are baffled. They've taken everything apart except the engine, and could not find the problem/cause. The sound is more annoying than anything, right? Have you had any major problems w/ ur car at all? Or is it just the noise....
its a normoal thing for this engine i think it has something to do with the vvtl-i loud valves and such. wait you said drivetrain ...what does this sound like?
I have a 2000 GT-S and from time to time do notice some noise and I know I have a bad synchro in my transmission as well; thats what you get with high RPM downshifts in an 8 year old car I guess. I do have a good amount of valve train noise but am going to switch to a lighter weight oil and hopefully that will help. As for drivetrain noise, I think everyone has a little more than normal for the reason that Toyota said, it is a very stout transmission and the gears are probably not as quite as they could be if you were driving some 130 HP Corolla.
Is it a creaking sound? Sort of like a rattling sound that goes away when your clutch is pressed in? It has nothing to do with the transmission. It is your clutch!
It is your clutch release bearing. Most likely your clutch is shot and needs to be replaced. You should get a good aftermarket clutch like Exxedy or ACT.

For me, it's not the clutch at all. It's gotta be the gears. When I first bought the car, the synchronizers were messed up, and after hell, they gave me a new tranny and clutch... and the noise gets worse when i gas it, and then after about 5500 RPM or so, it goes away, but if I let off the accelerator it rattles 2.... =/ thanx for all ur replies, guys.

Read the symptoms. The sound goes away as soon as he presses the clutch and as soon as the clutch is released, the creaking sound comes back.
Guaranteed it is the clutch release bearing.

I have an 04 GT Tsunami Ed. and i had my entire tranny replaced by toyota due to faulty synchros and horrible Toyota mechanics. A lot of Celicas regardless of the generation have bad transmissions, it's wierd a lot of my friends own celicas and they all have had some type of problem with their trany's. Do you hear any noise in between gears when you shift? Or is it one steady grinding noise when you're driving?

Hi there. I'm not sure if you're asking me, or flyingsleeves... BUT, for me, no grinding noise, more like a rattle. The synchros were all screwed up in mine 2, when I bought her 5 years ago, so my tranny and clutch were replaced. As for the sound, it's a steady rattling sound at certain RPMs, and is louder when I press on the accelerator. I have no clue
