Engine Knock?

I think my 87 has engine knock... it all of a sudden started making this horrible racket from the engine bay, its like a Clack clack clack but its deafeningly loud!!! i have to plug my ears while driving it with earplugs!!!

i know i probably shouldnt drive it, im probably going to just part it out and get another one

any ideas how i can test to see if its engine knock or like maybe just an exhaust leak or something? it really sounds metallic though....

oh BTW, i had a friend rev it, the knock frequency increases with the RPMs, and when i held my hand over the exhaust while he revved, stuff hit my hand, like metal shards or possibly just carbon deposits breaking off and flying out, either way i think its not so good...

Darkecho,

If you can get a mechanices stethiscope, you can pinpoint exactly where the noise is. If it is deafening, then I would suspect a rod like moparman said.

Just wanted some more facts. . .What EXACTLY does the material being ejected through your exhaust look like. If your luckly it could just be the begining of the end for your cat. (Assuming you have one in place). The secondary resonator may also be fried. Either or both of these things can make a perfectly fine engine sound and run like hell!
