Exclamation '91 Celica GT 5-speed now will not start!

My brother was coming home from work in Kansas City, Kansas when his '91 Celica GT 5-speed started acting weird. He said the rpms were ranging up and down while he was driving and at idle?

He got it home and tried to re start the car and no catch? The car crancked good and he could smell gas but not kick?? What could it be the distributor, spark plugs, wires? One of the screws that is holding on the dis. cap he replaced two years ago is striped so he can't get the dis. cap off!

he needs top get to work in the AM need help NOW!!

Anyone know any good Toyota shops in Kansas City, KS??

Sounds an awful lot like a timing belt issue. I have a 91GT and had the same symptoms. If you can locate FredK on this forum, do so. He knows his stuff. I do know that the cycling in RPM's and the inability to start were the two things that happened on my GT, and it was the timing belt. It does take awhile to do by yourself, but it beats the $600 it will cost at a dealership.

Unhappy Hope it's not timing belt!

Wow thanks sjents, is the engine interfearance so it would let the pistons bang into the valves if the belt broke? Or is it non-interfearance where if it did not break at high rpm he might be OK!

5SFE is a non-interference engine.

Thumbs up Yep!

Brother got a call from the import place that specilizes in Volvo's that they were PRETTY sure his timing belt snaped. Quoted $320 to replace it, not bad

They said that the inner and outer CV boots were starting to crack also and might as weel do it for $230. So got two jobs done for roughly $600 and he can keep it on the road a little longer.

What are these things worth in fair condition with 120k on them?

Sounds like a decent price for the timing belt. If your gonna keep it go for the total repair IMHO.
A somewhat decent honest mechanic is somewhat hard to find. I hope you found one.
