Gen5 91 GT Conclusion

Hey,

Recently bought a 91 Celica GT with 126k for 2.4k The car was a purchase for my wife we already had a 90 Rolla that she was digging but of course as we all know the rust on it was starting to suck. The Celica is a decent car and I really did not do a hell a lot of research before buying it. The Toyota name sells itself in my book. After owning it now for less then a month and putting less then 500miles on it I am convinced it was 1 of my worst purchases ever. I read this forum as well as Celispeed and a few others that offer tips and help on Toyota's in general and feel that instead of the it wearing the GT badge it should have something different on the back maybe "Limited". Limited quality, limited upgrades, Limited horsepower. I know that those words will create alot of bad feelings with the community but the frustration just has me overwhelmed. The car was bought new in VT and I am now the 2nd owner living in upstate NY, resources are so very limited up here for anyone with the technology to assist me and others in trying to get that "little bit more" out of such car. Up here they consider a modified racer, a car with the round Borla muffler hanging out the back. most of us would agree that an upgrade of that sort is real minimal. When it comes to real world class automobiles we need to look at the big picture and to obtain that takes real world money. I have done as much research as possible on the new GT and have come to the realization that this car is something that I will simply drive w/ minimal investments for maintenance or enhancements then pawn off to some other person that looks at it to be the next "Bad Boy Car" on the streets. The GT sits as a 1991 Toyota Celica 5S-FE, handling package, rear spoiler, flip lights, Sony CD deck that replaced stock cassette normal wear and tear on the paint but nothing to cosmeticly deficent. I had some great dreams and goals when I first got it bought a set of 14X7 rims off a 86 celica that I intend to wrap with a set of 195x65's for summer use and set aside the winter tires w/steel rims. Besides that it is the end for me of anything else that would enhance the car besides wash and wax. Dash lighting decides that it likes to flicker on and off at its own will, rust now starting to develope on the inner forward portion of the rear fenders, loves to ping on hard excelleration no matter what the timing or octane used. Up in Arms here in Upstate NY half hr away from the Canadian border with a car that cant get out of its own way now calling itself the gut-less wonder.

Clean looking car. Not a bad price. What is "ping on hard excelleration"?

fuel

Dont use the 87 fuel use 91 your engine will run much better on it. Your problem could also be a timing one check the distributor for any signs of wear and the plugs. The ping noise is a pre ignition, weak mixture or a too low grade of fuel.
