Tranny Swaps

Does any one know if I can simply swap an s54 5 speed manual in to my 91 celica. I tracked down one with 75k outta 95 gt. Just curious. Also I heard I can look in to the mr2's as well. I gotta find out since my second gear syc's are grinding like a mofo. Guys quote 10-12 hours labor for a syncro replacement and most of the guys in the shop tell me no one really rebuilds them nowadays at toyota. Any feed back would be Great!

Does your car and that one have similar engines? The GT should have a 2.2 5SFE. If your car has an 'S' engine then yes, if it has an 'A' engine then no. The MR2 transmission won't help you. If you have an 'A' engine you can source a transmission from a Corolla.

Well my main concern is axle's and bolt patterns. I know that it shouldnt be a issue but I dunno. Id just like to know if any one else has done this before. Also anybody know of any good performance clutch's? Ive got a centerforce stage 1 but it sucks ass! Any feed back?

what are u talking about of course the mr2 transmition will work there were stock N/A mr2, you have to do a bit of converting to get it to work right but it will bolt up to the 5s if thats what you have in your celica now. In terms of clutches you can go with a spec, act or clutchmasters. XTD i hear makes good clutches too but a friend of mine had some clutch clatter with them, but they took it back without a hassle. The s54 tranny will bolt up to the 3sgte block so if you wanted you could even use a 93+mr2 tranny with lsd from the 3sgte mr2, or you could use the tranny out of a v6 camry or solara which are the same tranny as the 93+ mr2 just without lsd, and cost a little bit less then the mr2 tranny.

same engine and same tranny. Both gens are using a 5sfe 2.2L engine, and all s series trannies can bolt on.

the 94+ have better syncros in them. You would ideally like to find one from a new celica.
