Gen5 slipping in 3rd gear

This friday and today (saturday) I spent on my 1991 celica GT-S. One problem I had been having was a slipping in third gear. I guessed it was the clutch and dropped in a new exedy clutch... Despite this, I am still slipping in third gear and the other gears dont feel "tight" either. What could be wrong with the tranny to cause this?

You didn't say anything about changing the pressure plate. Have you?

It isn't very characteristic of a manual transmission to slip. next thing that comes to mind is did you clean off the oil residue from the pressure plate and flywheel? Just like you clean off new brake rotors, take brake cleaner to the metal surfaces before putting it together. Or in another case an oil leak from the engine causing the clutch to slip?

the engine isnt leaking and the plate was brand new and flywheel was sanded down and cleaned before putting it in. I was slipping in 3rd gear before the clutch job, now I am still slipping, thats why the only thing I see is the tranny as being the problem. What would cause a gear to slip in the tranny? synchros?

Guess it comes down to the process of elimination... I was just on e-bay looking at transmissions and hell for the prices what you have to lose. Only $200 US. outright for one to mate up to the 4sfe what you have to lose?

I am about to do a clutch change myself in my 91 GT that I just bought Friday. I have had a 91 ST for the last 6 years and am familiar with it and ASSUMED popping the 2.2 out of the GT and changing the clutch would be a breeze, THEN I looked under the hood!!! LOL I think dropping the transmission is my best bet.

LOL when she gets impatient, you get cranky... I do that and she doesn't mind me doing my own thing.

I found something that might help you with finding your problem and it may very well have been the machining you had done to your flywheel. http://www.roadraceengineering.com/c...ywheeltech.htm

best of luck!

Test #1

Do a test for us...... Pop your car in third gear when at a stand still. rev 3000-3500rpm. Then pop the clutch out(very fast) while on the brakes. and see how long it takes for the eingine to go to 0 rpm. If it seems like it's slipping it's because something isn't engaging. and it could be as simple as tightening some kind of cable. I don't know much but try this first.

i did what u asked. As soon as I get my foot of the gas, even before hitting the clutch, it pops out...this is only in third gear though. However when in 4th gear when i hit the gas the take my foot of it, the shifter moves in its position towards the back but doesnt fully pop out. Idont think its just the cables but i could be wrong.

You are confusing us all. LOL Your clutch is fine.... Your linkage is messed up. I had a camry that had the same problem in the same gear. To use 3rd gear the driver must hold the shifter knob up towards the dash, other wise it'll fall out of gear and grind, because it won't fall all the way back to neutral. I think thats your problem. I'm happy to figure out your problem. I think your best bet is to buy that new transmission and it'll probably fix all of your tranny problems. We had a mechanic look at the camry and he couldn't fix it with out lots o' $$$$$.. So my dad said we'll just have to hold third in. lol

This whole time you were trying to say it was popping OUT of gear and not gear or clutch slippage??? LOL

LOL it is kinda funny but you had people thinking like you have been saying all along "slipping in third gear" you are actually experiencing "Jumping/Popping OUT of third gear" but with that all done and said we now know what is really going on. It could very well be linkage problems or a tranny fork problem. As far as the shifter moving towards the back under a load is going to happen. Next time you are driving down the road watch your shifter as you accelerate and decelerate, it is moving along with the engine and tranny which is completely normal. Thanks to thousand_five you are now on the right track.
