Struts

I need to replace the struts in my 2000 Celica GT, but I know absolutely nothing about brands and such... any suggestions? So far I've found Tokico and KYB. Any advice would be great, thanks.

New cars are crap. Old cars ROCK, if you've got the money to keep the runing. LOL

Mine has 200,000 km on it and they are COMPLETEly shot so I don't think I would do OEM again. OEM is $2-300 per shock for a gts. :-P I am in vancouver - does anyone know of an inexpensive place here I can get them replaced- or in Seattle? KYB would be fine. I am surprised how crappy the stock ones are compared to my 93 bmw 318 which were still great after 225,000km.

Ole well..

depends on how you abuse them and its not like they used the same model shocks 7 years apart. if you race around over speed bumps they might last you 6 months, much less 6 years.

jimww: are you sure those are the original shocks?i find it hard to believe that the originals are still god on your bmw. and them being shot by 200k km is also harldly surpising. i bought my 132k mile cressida with blown shocks, when i took them off i compressed them by hand and they didnt expand again....still sitting on a shelf compressed months later. lol

YOU, are being ripped off by your dealer my friend. Here in St. John's, Newfoundland at Toyota Plaza, I paid about $180 per front strut and they had a lower perch on them, unlike the GR-2 from KYB. Funny thing is, they are made KYB, are black, look identicle to the GR-2 and have the lower perch, for about the same money. I've had both sets.

GR-2's lasted all of 13 months. So far, OEM are in there for 8, not a problem and I fully intend to remove and get the new ones under warranty before the 12 month date. I didn't have them installed at the dealership, so I only got a 1 year warranty. KICKING MYSELF now however.

Buy OEM or buy a true performace strut. Stay away from Gabriel and Monroe.

Buy Bilstein or Koni

KYB GR-2 = CRAP !

well seeing as how I just bought the car not even 2 weeks ago and it's 6 years old.... I really have no idea of knowing how it was driven, all I know is that the shocks are shot - so therefore need to be replaced.

I do however, know how I drive the car.... and I'm a rather aggressive driver. I definitely don't race over speed bumps but I probably drive the car harder than I should if I'm trying to preserve it.

Thnx for all the info
