Help!!!!

91 GT 2.2 Liftback 2XX,XXX miles

Everything was going great. Started fine, ran perfect. This afternoon, in the parking ramp at work, I went to start it and it just cranked and cranked. Tried starting about 10 times, it would not fire. Floored the pedal and tried starting it, small backfire after I stopped turning the key.

Facts (as I know them):

-Changed the timing belt just over 1 year ago
-Engine must have been getting fuel, as the engine did backfire exhaust through the cold air intake
-New Battery

Please, does anyone have an idea of what I should be looking for? This repair may need to be done in the parking garage as soon as tomorrow, so any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Much,

Steve

By the sounds of it, it sounds as if it has jumped time. Eventhough the timing belt isn't all that old it can still jump it time. If anything else have it checked just to rule it out. Most times if it even jumps a single tooth the engine will not run.

Resolution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went out last night to check a few things out with my dad. He was looking under the hood while I tried to start it. Kept cranking, no catch or fire. Hmmmm...........

Moved the distributor around a little. Nothing. No catching at all. Dang it.

Moved the aftermarket cold air intake to get at the distributor to further inspect it. Saw that the intake was sitting on top of the ignition coil wire....wire coating had been stripped. Exposed Ignition coil wire+Metal bracket from Aftermarket Intake= A Dead Celica. Placed some electrical tape around the exposed part of the wire.

Boom. Started on the first try. You have to be kidding me.

Drove it home quickly to the folks' garage to get a timing light on it, thinking it could have slipped a tooth as well as losing spark via the coil wire fiasco. 10BTDC wasn't hacking it, and I was getting a little sick of the hesitation in 3rd gear under 3K RPMs, so advanced it a little. I can live with the temp needle being 1 notch further up the gauge.

I love inexpensive, quick fixes. I do know that getting out of this one easy only means I will get T-Boned or something sometime soon. The vehicle gods don't smile upon you for long.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah when I debug, I always start with the aftermarket parts.
