i was gonna say just about everything that has allready been sain lol.. 5sfe non interference engine. (i love it) of course there wont be any spark without the belt.. its pretty much the string that holds everything togeather combustion turns the crank witch is driving the cams by a belt witch is driving the dist. whitch is distributing the spark and we are back to combustion again..if one of those is missing like the belt the cams And the dist dont move but there will be NO DAMAGE from a broken belt

First of all to those who say that a distributor will never seize up is WRONG. Hyundai cars have this happen to them ever once in a while. The dist. will lock up and snap the camshaft.
I have NEVER heard of this happening to a TOYOTA and dont see how it could.

What I would do.
1. Get him to take out the dist. and show you if it spins or not if it does then
2. Get him to put on a new timing belt
3. Try and start it up
