i have a 1991 celica gt (5SFE)and i recently blew her up I then got an engine (5SFE) from a 90 gt-s. strong tight engine. I swaped them and hooked everything up right, Vaccume and electric. But it seems to have an issue.a dead spot from 1\4 to almost half throttle. Very slight throttle and its ok. a lil more 2000-3000rpm it totally bogs out as if all power is cut drops down to idle rps then surges between idle and 2200. all the while holding the pedal steady. i checked sensors all seem to be fine. no engine light or stored codes. i tryed reseting ecu to no avail. then i had a crazy idea. UNPLUG THE TPS! throttle position sensor. Idle was rough but it didnt mess up at any rpm. could hear popping in exhaust when i let off the throttle, but thats just unburned fuel. its kinda wierd though cause i STILL didnt get an engine light or any stored code.i know the light works but i should have got it to light up with the TPS unplugged.. same wit O2 sensor unplugged but no warning light.. ANYWAY with it running ok with tps unplugged. is it safe to say thats the culprit? is it ok to drive with it unplugged?is it Just from sitting on a shelf in a warehous for a long time before i got the engine? should i pull the one off the blown engine and swap it? Is there a diff between GT and GT-S electronics. (I know its the same 5SFE but is the ecu different or anything like that?) anyway any help would be appreciated
i would look at the timing, bc my 5sfe had the same problem here and there, also look at the vacume lines at the rear of the engine, some are really small and hard to hook up when putting in the engine, u just have to feel around for things.
timing most likely. if you can, pull the cover off the TPS and clean it out. rubbing alchohol or electronic parts cleaner. also clean the plug on it.

"You don't get to judge me for how I fix what you break"
is it possable to set the timing Physcally when the engine is off? put the ballancer at 10 then pull the cap and turn dizzy till the rotor is lined with the electrode or is a light a must have?. you can do that on older cars but there wasnt as many "AI" computers then either mostly vac advance. ALL vac lines are hooked up. I mitickulusly chased them down there all good.routed right. It idles great ant anything over 3000 rpm is solidhighway is ok city is a bitch! makes me look like a rookie on stick bouncin and chuggin cause it cuts out
well, what i do, is make sure that ur 1st piston is at compretion stage, and then just make sure ur distrib is set at the first piston, after that all u have to do is tinker with it untill it sounds good, its should be smooth at idel.
did the new engine come with a distrib, or did u put urs in.
i had to use my old one. after new cap wires and plugs of course. i think there is only 1 fireing order fo the 5sfe "1342". How much do the timing belts stretch?/ maybe the cam is off by a tooth to the crank? ive tryed advancing the timing but then i hear knocking when i let off the throttle when i retard it she stumbles BAD. i have it set at 10* physcally but how much does the ecu and sensors affect the timing?
hmm i don't remember how much the timming has to be set, i think i set it a 0, sorry about that, u can just look that one up, but they don't strech for no reason,
just try setting it at 0, bc that i believe is the compretion for the frist piston, well once u go around to the compretion stage, then all u have to do is mess with the distrib,
Will I Do Damage If I Drive With The Tps Unplugged? There also seems to be somthing that isnt turning off causing my battery to drain overnight. CRAP! how do i find out what it is? theres gonna be 1 less 5th gen celica in this world if i cant figure it out
i don't think that u will do any damage if u drive with the tps unpluged, bc that just helps regulate amount of fuel,
about the batter thing, u can get a fluk, and start unpluging things and seeing if they draw any power. its should be something small like a trunk ligh or something along those lines. once u have gone through all that start digging deeper.. good luck
why would tps need to be moved if it wasnt touched to begin with? although i did go out and pull the cover off and had a look. if i apply upward pressure to the plug (kinda moves the little contacts)it seems to clear up. so i will loosin off the screws and set the tps then tighten everything up and i will let you know whats up. thanx hachi!
