idle hanging up

New to this site, hoping someone can help me. I have a 1987 Celica GT conv. I'm having problems with the idle staying up at around 2000 rpm's when I push in the clutch to come to a stop. If I blip the throttle slightly it will drop down to a good idle of about 650, is this a sensor, any ideas? thanks for any help.

Worry about it if your engine stalls after you push the clutch in. Low idle= little gas used

thanks for the possible help, could you tell me where I should be looking, was yours starting to fray where it was actually noticable, lately my cruise hasn't been working, I wonder if the two problems are associated?

Cruise probably isn't the same problem.
There should be a long black cable coming out of the firewall [metal barrier between you and the engine]. It will run from somewhere by the drivers side to the front of the car, then loop twards the pass side, then back to the drivers side. It's attached to the engine.

See the big square silver thing in the center of the pic [the intercooler, in case you know]?
There's a black cable that loops around it.
Your cable looks like that, just routed differently. This is an old pic of my engine.

thanks for the help, I'll check into it, as far as the cruise goes, I may have solved that problem, I noticed the 3 prong connector going into the speed control actuator was unplugged, the place that just put in a timimg belt a couple of weeks ago may have forgot to plug it back in if they removed it, that was about the time it stopped working, thanks again. dave

you can see here on my old car where it goes into the cruise unit, the cable on top is the one that broke, if you look really close you can see where it broke the black covering and where metal meet. The actual cable was broke and fraying about 2 or 3 inches in. Thats the cable that goes from your gas pedal to the cruise unit.
