Water Pump/Timing Belt -- 89 GT

Today my wife and I pulled in a parking lot this morning and all of the sudden our 89 Celica GT started making this loud knocking noise that sounded like it was coming from around the belts area. When we got back home I pulled in to our apt complex and looked under the car and antifreeze was pouring out of the car. Does this knocking noise and leaking antifreeze mean my water pump is bad? If so, how much will that run me for parts and labor and how much would it be to replace the timing belt at the same time? I need to know very quickly what you guys think b/c we're heading on a trip soon and I need to know a good price in case I need to haggle with my mechanic tomorrow.

Can't anyone give me a good ballpark figure on what the cost is going to be to replace a water pump and a timing belt, labor and parts included? I've got a great mechanic that's got incredibly reasonable prices. Can anybody help me??????

Call around your local shops. I changed my waterpump myself on my 85 Celica GTS. Was pretty simple. Unfortunately for me. I ran my car hot too many times and too long before I changed my waterpump and ended up with a blown head gasket. But yes, call around your local shops and get a price quote from each. Its probably better doing that than coming on here and asking people. Get it from the source.

I as a mechanic would question what that knocking was about... a leaking pump won;t make that noise, so some dio is invilved in whether you have cooked that motor. sorry!

the good news is that a water pump replacement is pretty routine and should be about 6-8 hundred. And yes, if your gonna tear into it, replace the timing belt while you're there, assuming that your pump is driven by youy timimng belt.

Well, it wasn't really a knocking noise but I don't know exactly how to describe the sound. The car actually runs fine when it's on and there's no nasty smoke coming out of it or anything. In fact, if you ignored the noise you couldn't tell because the car runs exactly the same, it just makes a noise that sounds like it's coming from where all the belts are. That and antifreeze is pouring out and there's no pressure at all in the radiator. Does this sound like a water pump problem?

Alright, I've got an update. I took it to my mechanic, he replaced the water pump, timing belt and also resurfaced the rotors (different issue),and it cost me a total of $452 for all of that. Apparently it took 4 hours @ 65/hour to do the timing belt and water pump. I love this guy and he's a great mechanic, but is that price kinda high for an 89 celica? The parts cost me $30 for the belt, $50 for the pump.

Nop its right. Try do that yourself and see if you can do it in 8 hrs. One of the engine mount has to come off before he can see the belt. Crank pulley has to come off before he can get the belt out. Plus drain coolant, refill, get air out.
