86 gt-s havin trouble starting

So here's the deal; my car randomly chooses not to start. So far the only real constant is that it doesn't like to start when it's hot. To start it when it's being finicky I either just have to keep trying it or I have to push it and pop the clutch. I've gotten the starter replacd so I know it's not that. I've got a friend who drives a (I think) '91 gt that has the exact same problem.

Anyone also have this problem? Any solutions? I'm sick of taking it to my mechanic and him telling me it works just fine for him and then getting it back and having it not start exactly when im parked in a dip and I really need to get somewhere.

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and post script. Once it gets started, I'd like for it to be quick. Any advice for just simple mods? I definitely don't wanna invest in a turbo or anything like that, but I would like some pickup.

What does it do? Does it crank at all, when "it doesnt want to start"?

Simple Mods: De-cat your exhaust (unless you might have problems getting a "fixed" emissions sticker), get some headers, nice muffler, get a nice intake system, new distrubutor, plugs, wires, synthetic oils in engine and tranny/differential. You will feel a difference after that.

Thanks for the advice so far, awesome.

Sorry, I totally forgot the details when I posted that, it was about 1 am so I wasn't thinking.

No, it doesn't crank at all, just clicks whenever I turn the key with the clutch properly in. I suspect it might be some sort of faulty "safety" switch associated with the clutch. I'm just curious to know if there's any history of celicas having this problem.

Been hunting for the same thing, I don't trust anything I find on the internet so I'm skeptical as to what I've found so far. I found three supposedly for a 1986 celica made by Pacesetter.
Also, what's the good in replacing the distributor cap, wires, and plugs if there aren't any electrical problems. Just serve as a tune-up?
