95 Celica 1.8L - black smoke at idle - HELP

Hey guys I'm writing this for my buddy he has a 95 Celica 1.8L. The car puffs black smoke at idle indicating a rich condition and it uses fuel at an abnormal rate (120 miles to a tank). I immediatley thought the fuel pressure regulator was shot but after replacing that the car still smokes and uses alot of fuel. We replaced the plugs when we did the regulator and after the car ran for 5 minutes we pulled the plugs and they were black.

I'm really stumped on this one, the only thing I could think of was the regulator because I don't think the oxygen sensor would make it smoke heavily and use fuel like it is.

Any ideas?

Also to set the timing you have to jump two terminals on the check plug correct? Is this one of the two plugs located on top of the distributor? Which two plugs must you jump?

Thanks alot.

Exclamation

Black Smoke is fuel and the carb, but if doesn't have a carb, than injectors.

I understand it's a fuel problem, but how would a clogged injector cause the car to run rich?

Any other ideas?..

Perhaps just bit the bullet and pay for a proper tune-up at a trusted mech (or buy the proper repair/service manual for said vehicle). That way, you have someone else to batch at (beats batching at ones-self ). I'm sure this info is out there somewhere....or maybe you could locate a repair manual..... just winging it is likely going to be the long road, me thinkst. Get help, one way or another (manual or mechanic ....)
