water temp wiring

just finished putting a new engine in my 87 st celica (3sfe) and just finalising the wiring of everythng. majority is now hooked up BUT i cannot figure out where the plug for the water temperature sensor in the thermostat housing has gone. among my left over bits is a plug that will fit but has the wire snipped. i cant find out where it has been snipped from.

can someone post up or link a pic showing where the plug goes into the loom.

I am not sure I understand your problem. Is the sensor already screwed into the housing? If you took out the old engine, you must have removed the wire plug to the sensor. Usually the wiring harness guides the wires to the appropriate sensor.

If the plug wire was cut when you removed the engine, place it back on the sensor and see how far the wire extends. Then look for a loose wire in this area.

If this is a used engine, the seller may have just cut the wire to the sensor when moving the engine.

yeah fair call...

ok it has taken me 7 months to remove and install a near new engine which came from a jap camry. due to the time i have taken ive forgoten things and stupidly ddnt note things down or take fotos. the thermostat housing, water temp sensor and water pump i swapped over from the existing engine.

i have searched the majority of the wiring loom now the engine is running in the car and cannot find the large plug thats supposed to go on the water temperature sensor in the thermostat housing.

among my left over bits i have a plug that will fit the sensor but it has been snipped off the loom. im not sure if this came from the existing loom and snapped when i removed it from the car or if it came with the new engine.

i have re wrapped the loom with electrical tape around the alternator because alll the plastic crap has become brittle and broken away. so the broken wire may have been inadvertantly wrapped up in there too.

so what i wanted was a photo of the wiring around the alternator area. hopefully this will show me where my water temp plug used to go into the loom instead of trouble shooting the whole loom.

i basically want to know wat an original 1 should look like to base mine off of.

thanks

I can relate to your situation.

So, you need a photo of the water temperature sensor and connecting wiring coming out of the harness. Unfortunately I can't help. Perhaps someone on TN can.

One more thought. Does the plug you found fit the water temp sensor on the car? If your wiring was bad, brittle, the plug you see may be the original off your car. It may have just broken off. You may have clipped it off because the wiring was bad and you were going to fix it, later.

You may not be looking for a plug after all, but the ends of the wires where it used to attach. The wires have to be somewhere on the harness unless you removed them completely. I am sure you did not do this. You may have just taped over them. Undo the tape within say 6 inches of the sensor and see if the wires are there.
