Need alittle help...

I have a 1976 Celica GT liftback. With the stock 20R engine, 5spd.. And I am getting the worst gas mileage ever. I am lucky to get 18 on the highway. Is there any thing i can do to boost gas milage and horsepower? I know that you have to sacrifice one of them but it would be nice to get more then 95 hp out of my car. I have researched those turbonaters and stuff and heard that they suck. So anything will help. Thanks

Mike

First, make sure that there's nothing wrong the engine (spark plugs, timing, fuel quality, worn rings, etc).

Put a 32/26 Weber carb on it.
Gives better performance and better milage.

Or an EFI system from a 22R-E.
Gives more smoother performance and better milage.
Not too hard to wire up the computer and injectors.
For that matter, increase capacity by using the entire 22R-E but use the 20R head (higher compression ratio).

You can also change your diff ratio.
Higher number (eg 4.1) give snappier acceleration, lower top speed, higher fuel consumption on the highway and speedo reads higher than real speed.
Lower number (eg 3.727) give worse accelration, higher top speed, lower fuel consumption on the highway and speedo reads lower than real speed.

Spark plugs were just changed. I had a whole tune up done. Is all of this pretty cheap to do or are we looking at some pretty good money going in to this?

Oops, yes, meant 32/36.

32/36 Weber should be cheap enough to find secnd hand.
Here in Australia they were on mid sized sedans, so the wrecking yards are full of them.
I've been told that they aren't too hard to find in America.
Might need an adaptor plate to fit your 20R inlet manifold.

If you can find a second hand 22R-E cheap enough then it should drop in to where the 20R used to be.
Same gearbox and engine mounts.
The wiring of the computer could be challenging but if you also get the donor car's wiring loom then you should be able to figure it out.

It's all in the cost of the second hand parts.

Do compression test to determine if engine is in a good mechanical condition.

try this, or swap to a 22R, which will bolt right up to your tranny, regardless of the year of engine. You can use one out of a 4x4/4x2 truck, but you will have to switch the oil pan and oil pick-up tube in from a car.

The 32/26 will give you a slight boost in hp, and possilby better gas mileage.
But you will probalby be better off with a Weber 38. It will give you an even better bump in hp.
You will need a adaptor plate for either carb.
