Brake Job on 86 GT Help

Hi, I'm looking for any documentation online that I can refer to on how to do a complete brake job on an 86 celica gt - pads, shoes, calipers and rotors. I tried searching the board but didn't see the info I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone can recommend a site that has the cheapest part prices that would rock! I still need front calipers and shoes, and everything on the rear.

THanks!

Grab a chiltons or Haynes manual, very useful.

for parts, try to find somewhere local that sells them, shipping is always a bitch.

but, www.carpartswholesale.com has good prices.

hey everyone

Thanks for the replies. I can get a chiltons manual on ebay for around 15 bux, i think thats a good idea if I plan to tackle this job by myself.

I recently took the car to a midas shop and the estimate showed i needed a new everything all the way to the master cylinder! I'm hoping just changing pads and calipers ... maybe rotors.

How do i tell if I have a 2se, I see the manual specifies a model 2s-E and 3s-GE. What are the differences, I'd like to know.

Thanks again,

nat

just open up the hood~
3S GE and 2S FE are totally different~

2S FE is a small engine~, you should find a lot of space in your engine bay. haha

the most noticeable part is 3SGE have TVIS on the intake manifold but 2SE have EFI
also the spark plug wires are going to the front not on the side
there is a black block infront of the engine. It is the rotor.

uhhhh...

i wouldn't trust midas... but a brake job is not that hard.

i would recommend having a professional install your master cylinder however... brake lines (especially on an old car) are notoriously easy to break. Were you to break one in your driveway, you would be forced to tow you car to a shop (hopefully not midas). Bleeding a master cylinder isn't exactly an simple job... sorry, i just realized that you aren't doing this....please disregard.

calipers are quite easy to replace, but make sure you have a buddy on hand that knows what he/she is doing.... it always sucks to have mushy brakes...oh and make sure you have a strong leg, cause its "pump......hold.......pump......hold" time.

have fun!

thanks

Hey Den the engine is a 2se, is that a good thing?

I don't think I'm going to do the master cylinder, I will probably just cover the basic stuff and go from there.

I scored some front brake pads for $10 and I'm eyeing a pair of brembo slotted rotors for the front as well. Now I just need to find the calipers and shoes I think, and everything for the rear.

I'll definately have to find a friend but I don't know if he/she will know what they are doing Of course messing with brakes isn't something to be taken lightly so I know I can depend on you guys expertise if I run into a jam!

Thanks
