hmm...high idle

Recently bought an auto 1985 Celica GT for $150...the owner said it had tranny issues. Flushed the tranny now it runs great except for the high idle. The only reason it wont pass smog is because it is supposed to be idleing at around 750 and its actually at close to 1550 to 1600. Can ne one help me figure out why or how to turn down the idle. (BTW ive already adjusted the distributor all the way to slow it down as much as possibel) Thanks

There is an adjustment screw on the carby.
You will find it near where the cable pulls on the pulley which opens the butterfly valve.
It limits how far the butterfly valve can relax back to the closed position (ie no air).Adjust yours so that the buttefly valve closes a little more.
You will probably want to return the dizzy to its original position.

There is also a second screw at teh base of the carby which controls how much fuel is put into the engine at idle.
You probably don't want to change it but if the pulley adjustment above does't work then try the second screw.

If all else fails, go to any mechanic.
This is a 2 minute job if the rest of the engine is healthy.

I believe the 85 US model is EFI.Therefore:
Check bimetal air by-pass valve, to make sure, it is not stuck open;
Adjust idle to the spec. by turning clockwise the adjusting screw on the top of the throttle body.
For more info refer to Autozone.com repair information.
If, after adjustment, the car will begin to run rough, check vacuum hoses and related items.
