1988 - hard starting - poor performance

My 1988 has become hard to start and is not performing well. It had been stalling coming off idle. I replaced the plugs, wires, and distributor cover, My mechanic checked the timing and has replaced the air mass sensor and adjusted the idle. the timing belt has not slipped.

Conditions had seemed worse when it is damp which is why I replaced the ignitiion wires.

I can get up to higher speeds on the highway but the engine dows not have performance off the line. Starting usually takes several tries before it fires.

Any ideas what to check next and how to do it?
