Runs But dies after a bit.

Hi im new to the forum and i have 2 questions.

1) Where is the location of the fuel filter on the 1990 Toyota Celica SX 2.2L Australian Model.

2)This is a question from my dad.

The car was running fine but the red petrol light came on so he went and got petrol, then he came home and took my brother to the bus stop.
The car started with a bit of trouble then stalled when he took off he started it again it stalled a bit down the road. Started again got it home.
But thought it might be an air bubble in the fuel line because the fuel was so then he decided to go driving to see if it would force it out. It just kept doing the same thing every now and then when he was driving and he didnt want to flatten the battery so he left it on the street and walked home we now got our other car and towed it home but we would like to know if you have had this problem before and what is it and how to fix it.
Please list all the things that we need to check or replace.
And the possible Causes.

Thanks, Nathan
