Question HELP!! My Clutch Pedal Went to the floor and doesn't return on it's own!!!

I have an 85 ST (Last of the RWD's) and Yesterday while shifting from 2nd to 3rd I pushed in the Clutch Pedal and it just fell to the floor and didn't return. I had to Change gears with the speed of the engine until I got it home. I thought it was the Clutch master Cyl. So I replaced that and Nothing happened it still would go the floor. I removed the Slave Cyl and the Clutch Fork moves around A LOT...?? Should it move around much at all if the slave cyl is not connected?? I think the Fork is messed up?? Anyone know how to tell for sure??

Thanks

See if the slave cylinder piston setup moves the fork say 1 inch. If not, the problem is in the master/slave system. If so, the problem is inside the clutch housing. With the slave cylinder removed, the fork will move around, but not too much. It is held on a pivot point on the clutch housing and functions like a lever. At one end of the lever is the slave cylinder; the other is the throw out bearing. You might be able to remove the boot around the fork and see inside the clutch housing.

Yes, the pressure plate has springs to hold the clutch plate against the flywheel. These springs also help the clutch pedal return to the upright position by. Applying force to the throw out bearing, fork, hydraulic cylinders and then clutch pedal. Suggest go to the Camry forum and locate the on-line service manuals there. These are for the Camry but will greatly aid in understanding your problem.

did you replace the master cylinder? you should also replace the slave cylinder as well. most of the time, the problem is a hydraulic problem. it often traces back to the slave cylinder boot leaking. the piston in the slave cylinder becomes contaminated by dirt in the brake fluid(dot 3 also used for clutch hydraulic fluid) and wears away at the wall inside of the slave cylinder and thus fluid will leak past the piston and you wont be able to hold any pressure. replace that, bleed it post back what you find. make sure you replace the slave cylinder hydraulic pressure hose. they will often collapse internally and you will get the same problem. finally, the fork will have some play. at times it could feel as though its moving an inch. not so. it just feels that way but it could move a half an inch. when the system is bled properly, you wont be able to move it much if at all.

this happened for a while in my dad's 84 GT, he would stop and add fluid, and it would be good for a while. since he hasn't driven it in forever, I can't help you much.

Sorry I forgot to post back, But I replaced the Clutch Master Cylinder (and bleed it) and nothing happened. I then replaced the Slave Cylinder (and bleed it again) This fixed the problem. I now can shift smoothly once again..

I think I might have over reacted to the fork moving around as I was told by another Toyota owner that he had something similar happen to him and after he replaced both those parts like I replaced, it wound up being his Clutch Fork was Bad and he needed to remove the tranny to fix it . I appreciate your guy's Help a lot!! . Celica Owners ROCK!!!
