fuel pump runs continuously

Hey, when I turn on the ignition key, I can hear the pump running....but it doesn't seem to shut off. The first few seconds the tone is a low hum, then it switches to a higher pitched hum.

any thoughts.

thanks

On this car the fuel pump is controlled by two coil circuit opening relay near engine ECU. Remove it and check for broken spring/ fused together main contacts. If relay is OK, unplug the pump and attach test light instead. Turn ign. on. If light is ON, remove connector from the air flow meter. If light goes out, check /repair air flow meter. If light still on, there is a short to the ground on the wire that goes from the relay to the air flow meter.

Not following you on the description of broken spring/fuse relay. Not sure what that is or how to check it. Simple fuse I can do but spring/fuse relay is something im not familiar with.

thanks for the other advice though. Sounds good.

Fuel pump power is controlled by a relay and this relay may be defective. You need to pull the relay and test it. Or the air flow meter may have a problem, telling the fuel pump system the engine is running when it is not. If the pump stops working when the wire to the air flow meter is removed, this part could have problem. Or there could be grounded short in the wiring between the meter and relay.
