Head Bolt Torque

What is the proper torque for the head bolts? I bought a new set of bolts and the instructions with them say to torque to 47 ft lbs. The book I have says to torque to 36 ft lbs then another 1/4 turn. What is correct? I can't imagine that 1/4 turn is worth 10 ft lbs but maybe???

Thanks, Kerwin

Try to do this way: torque the bolts in two stages to 36 ft X lbs, then mark the bolt's head. Now, torque the bolt to 47 ft x lbs and estimate angle, how far it turns. If the bolts are fel-pro brand, just follow instruction supplied with the bolts.

The bolts are designed to stretch, hence the 90 degree rotation. The Toyota proceedure is to torque all bolts to 36 Ft-lbs. Then rotate each bolt ¼ turn (90 degrees). Use the head bolt tightening sequence in the manual. Mark each bolt head to allow you to accurately rotate the bolt 90 degrees. Lube the bolts prior to installation. You might even chase down the bolthole threads with a tap to clean them out. Or as Doctor J states, follow any directions that came with the bolts.
