brake problem

the brake pedal on my 91 celica will go almost to the floor, but when i release it and press it again, its goes back to normal. If I wait a minute the pedal will go to the floor again. I just had the rear pads replaced a week ago and the mechanic didn't adjust the one side correctly, so you can smell the hot brakes and feel the heat coming from that wheel, and that wheel alone. Not sure if that has anything to do it, but the pedal to the floor problem just started today. any thoughts?

update: fluid level ok. took it for a spin around the block, brakes worked perfectly. coudl an overheaded rear drum brake cause the above symptoms?

Yep the master cylinder could be bad and needs to be replaced. If your brake fluid is very low then you should also inspect the cylinder fluid level and fill to the appropriate level. Another possible culprit is that there's an air or leak in the hydraulic system, so you should bleed it or remedy the leak if there's any. Good luck with your brake issue.
