TPS Replacement

Hi Guys,

Had issues with the TPS in my 96 celica (man/5sfe). I replaced the tps from all recommendations i've seen in the forum, but just need help calibrating, i can't find the correct resistance values that i need to set. Is anyone able to assist me?

Cheers!
Ben

if you give it too much tps it might set a code or idle funny, back it up a little and leave it there, i run mine with as much tps as it can stand to get up the mountains here

Your talking about the Throttle Positioning Sensor right behind the throttle body right.

Just play with it somewhere near the middle and watch your idle when you find a good idle leave it there. That is what I did.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Played with the position of it a bit, can't really guage it using the idle, always seems like it is fine until i drive it down the street.

The first position i had the result was like driving a car with severe turbo lag, put my foot down and until the car slowly climbed higher in the revs did it start to put the boot in.

Changed it again and now it has the acceleration down low but doesn't seem to accelerate past 4k revs and when you take your foot off the accelerator bucks like a wild horse.

Havn't had the time on weekends to get out and play with it, i'll make an effort this weekend and let you know how i go. Does anyone have a service manual for this car that lists the exact readings for the tps that i need to set?

Ben

do you have a multi meter?

I can get you the info but you will need a multi meter to read where to adjust it to.

Sure do Hachi, i'd really appreciate you getting me that information!

It's just that i'm so paranoid that the tps isn't the last of the problems and i want to be 100% sure i've set it correctly to rule it out. I've replaced the ignition leads, spark plugs, coil, fuel pump and i was still having the issue of not being able to accelerate (put foot down hard on accerator and the revs would max at 3grand, put foot down very gently and it would rev out to red line) strange part is that it would only occur when the car was warm/sitting outside in the sun. If it was in the garage and drove it cold would be fine but then would gradually break down to the extreme point that unless i was driving down hill i wasn't going anywhere. That's how i actually found this forum searching and learnt about the tps issue.

aahhh, now we have the rest of the story, have you checked the cat converter, they can plug things up, when it wont fall out of a bucket take the 02 out and see if it blasts out the hole and does somewhat better

Sorry i really should have provided all that up front.

Hypothetically would the 02 sensor be adversly affected if there was no longer a cat...? Let's say it had a date with Mr Hammer?

Rotate the TPS all the way to one side and see if it help. Then put it at middle, then put it to the other side. One of them will give you acceleration back. If it doesn't, its not your TPS. Try another coil.

Appreciate all the help guys.

Update:

I've moved the TPS to a position that feels good. Able to accelerate fine, no bucking when backing off the throttle.
BUT one thing that has given me a scare, i just drove from my gf's to home this morning in peak hour so a fair bit of stopping and starting that took about 30 minutes. The car drove fine the entire time. Once i parked it, for the time it took me to run inside and grab my work pass and have a drink to come out and start it back up again to drive to work. I put my foot down and it completely broke down would barely accelerate to 2k rev's. I babied it enough to get momentum up and pushed through it and eventually the car got better (to the point i could accerate to 3.5k revs, just enough to reach the speed limit!). Is this still a TPS issue (still not positioned correctly?) or do i have some other problem on my hands?

I drove today in stinking hot weather (35 celicius) and over the course of the trip the car broke down pretty bad. Parked it in the shops for 10 minutes came out to start it and the car just conked out...

I've only just replaced the coil with a brand newy ? Surely i havn't a dud?
