cold air intake- mildew?

Hi everyone-

I have a 99 Celica GT that is currently stock. I am looking to change the intake system first, and have heard from a reliable source that cold air intakes run the risk of mildewing inside the piping. Is this a valid concern? Please forgive me if this has been asked before; I searched for it but found nothing- and this is my first time on a forum.

Thanks

I wouldnt worry too much about mildew........I would imagine that there is enough heat from the engine to dry out the intakes when the car is parked up after a run out to not have to give it a second thought......I have heard some strange questions over the years of Celica ownership....thats the first one about about mildew

Mildew forms most quickly in very humid atmospheres, thats why bathrooms can suffer if you dont have a vent. I doubt very much that your intake will be that humid....unless you live in a rain forrest or you park your car in the bathroom

Ya, that's a new one on me. Mold spores would have to get past your filter first of all, and stick to the walls rather than being burnt int he engine. Not very likely.

With Cold Air Intake, you should worry more about getting hydrolocked which will destroy your engine.I chose Short Ram over Cold Air.

I also find that an odd possibility as a CAI's downside.

I was thinking of putting a K&N conic filter on, and on their website they have this cover thing that is made to repel water. What do you think would be the difference in hp between a short ram and a cold air with that thing on it?

Between CAI and SRI......there's really not much difference in HP.I wanted to be safe so i chose SRI.

I just found out that my warranty will only let me change the filter element itself (I suppose that's a good thing- I was afraid it wouldn't let me change anything). What gains could I expect to see if I simply dropped in a K&N stock replacement filter?

i kno what you mean about warranties. can't hardly do anything with mine until i hit past 30k miles but i got my Cel with a modded intake so i made sure they put it under warranty at the dealership replacing mine today with a bigger one from advance auto. hoping to boost a little power but no doubt it hasnt been changed since the guy put a swap on it.

..on another note, you should be able to change your intake. it's just a bolt on mod. so if you ever had to take it back to the dealership for work, just swap the modded intake to the stock one and they cant say squat to you.
