cold startup help

I have an 84 celica gt, and on cold days, the car sputters for 10 seconds or more before starting, i recently changed my oil and used castrol gtx 10w-30.

My question is what oil do you guys with the 22re' run in cold weather, or recommend. And what other general maintenience should i do to my celica before winter. THAnks

The problem that you are describing could be cold start injector time switch related

Fig. 1: Cutaway view of the cold start injector

During cold engine starting, the cold start injector is used to supply additional fuel to the intake manifold to aid in initial start-up. The opening and closing of the injector is determined by the Start Injector Time Switch. when the engine coolant temperature falls below a certain point, the switch opens cold start injector.

10w 30 is fine for cold conditions. If you need a cold start injector i think i have one on my other manifold that i am not using. scraped project and have lots of 22re stuff around.

On a similar case, I disconnected the MAP sensor and installed a new plug and cap/rotor but to no avail. As preparation for cold weather months I usually had my cooling system flushed and filled.

What item are you calling a MAP sensor? Stock 83 Celicas with 22RE are using L-type Bosch EFI that does not have MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
