Gen5 3S-FE vs 3S-GE

Question for all you engine guys out there..... I used to have a 90GT back in the UK that had a 3S-GE engine that I had done various things to. I have since sold that and moved over to the States and now have in my posseion once again a 90GT but it has a 5S-FE engine in it which I am finding hard to find parts to modify it. I have however found plenty of 3s-FE engines for sale here which would be nice to set up on my bench and modify until the point that it needs to go into the car. My question is, the only difference I can see between the 3S-FE and the 3S-GE engine is the compression ratio.... is that the only difference and hence if I boost the compression ratio that should then kick out the same power as a standard 3S-GE?

Sorry about the long winded ness of the question but thought it best if you had all the facts!!!!

Cheers

I will try to help you out a little

First the difference between a 3sfe and 3sge

3sfe on cam drives the other, 3sge cams run seperate
3sfe lower horsepower, 3sge higher horsepower
3sfe seen as "economy motor", 3sge seen as "sports" motor (TVIS)

If you are just looking for a little more power add and intake and exhaust to your car with the current motor. If you are looking for a "little" more power you should look into swapping in a 3sgte which is a 2.0 litre turbo motor found in the alltracs and turbo MR2's.

If you have anymore question just post them up

the 5sfe/3sfe engines are very reliable, but not very powerful. the extent of the work you can realisticly do to an fe head is limited to exhaust, intake, and ignition. I have a 3sfe in my 90 camry. I have done exhaust work to it, pacesetter makes a set of headers for the 3sfe engine. I am not 100% sure on this, but I think the 5sfe has the same flange for the exhaust manifold, so maybe the pacesetter headers could work on your 5sfe.

the fe heads are not good candidates for large amounts of HP gain however... turbocharging is not something these engines can handle without a serious engine rebuild. If you want to stay normally aspirated look into a 3sge, sounds like you already have experience with that engine. the 3sgte is also a very similar engine... only major difference is the turbo obviously.

The 3sge has a totally different head than the 3sfe, the ge head is identical to the 3sgte head, just different springs and maybe different valves. The 3sfe has basically the same head as a 5sfe, but like I say, the ge has a wider head, way bigger intakes ports (that are shaped just beautifully by the way), and is an engine far more suitable to performance than the sfe. If you swapped in a ge, you could shoot it with nitrous and make more hp than a stock 3sgte, and for quite a bit less work.

Not just the compression ratio. Pistons, cams, intake and exhaust ports, both manifolds and engine tuning.

Gen5 Different specs for UK models

The 5th generation Celicas were available in the UK from 1990.
In the UK, two variations of 2 litre Gen 5 Celicas were available at launch - the 2.0GT 5 speed and the 2.0GT Automatic. These were followed shortly afterwards (October) by the awesome GT-4 (all trac in US).

Celica Gen5 2.0GT (Manual)

ST182 - 3S-GE Engine

Capacity 2.0 litres Normally Aspirated, Power 158 bhp @ 6600 rpm, Torque140 ftlb @ 2800 rpm, 0-60 7.9 seconds, Top Speed 137 mph, Fuel Economy 28.5 mpg, Fuel Capacity 60 litres, Wheel Size14" (205/60 Tyres)

Celica Gen5 GT4

ST185 - 3S-GTE Engine

Capacity 2.0 litres Turbocharged, Power 201 bhp @ 6000 rpm, Torque203 ftlb @ 3600 rpm, 0-60 6.7 seconds, Top Speed 143 mph, Fuel Economy 24.4 mpg, Fuel Capacity 68 litres, Wheel Size 15" (215/50 Tyres)

The 3S-FE WAS NEVER AVAILABLE IN THE UK.

3S-FE and 3S-GE mean: 3 is 3rd generation, S is the S series engine, F is economic head, G is performance head, E is electronic fuel injection. So 3S-GE = 3rd gen of S series engine with performance head and electronic fuel injection.
