Car won't start unless cables are attached

My sister bought a 2001 Celica GT back in July, but after driving it for a few weeks ended up getting a different car after a family member passed away. The Celica sat outside her apartment since then and until today hasn't been used. We decided to give the car to my fiance since hers recently broke down. When we went to start it however all it did was sit there and click, it wouldn't turn over. We thought either the battery had died or it was out of gas, so we added a little gas and jumped it. It started fine when we jumped it, so we drove it around the block a few times to recharge the battery. After stopping and turning the engine off though, it wouldn't start again. After some trial and error we've come to the realization that it will start fine when we're using jumper cables, but it just won't start on its own. Does this sound like a problem with the starter, or do we simply need to let the car run longer to let the battery recharge more. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we're currently out of ideas.

sounds like that battery is toast. take the car to autozone and have them check the output of the alt and see if the battery is holding a charge

100% you're battery, if it was your starter, you'd have a helluva time starting it and it wouldn't necessarily go on the first go (even with cables attached)

if it was your alt the thing would start and run until your battery died (I think not positive) but because its been sitting if it had an alarm it probably drained the battery to crap

my 90 has an alarm on it and it sat for 2 weeks in my garage without a start and the battery is toast :|

you could TRY charging it with a charger, but personally I'd just get a battery with a 2 or 3 year warranty so if it happens again, just replace

When i bought my 90 celica from this girl, she had the car parked for a little over a month. It hasn't been started in over a month so the battery needed to be jumped.I drove it from where i bought it to my friend's house which was like a couple of blocks over.I parked it at my friend's house and then turned it off.I tried restarting it and won't start.A mechanic family friend said to jump start it and let it idle for about 30 mins.So we just let it run parked on my friend's driveway for 30 mins. After 30 mins, i turned it off and restarted and it worked! That should fix that problem.
