Exclamation Crank Bolt

I have a 1993 2.2L engine. Trying to get the crank bolt off.

How do I get this sucker off? I'm trying to change the timing belt, and I'm stuck on it. This is what I've tried so far:

Method A:
Sticking a screwdriver into the crank pulley and using a crow bar to pry against it, keeping the pulley from turning while I try to loosen the bolt with a breaker bar

Problem A:
Screwdrivers all broke

Method B:
Using an impact wrench to break it loose

Problem B:
The electric impact gun I have can't handle it, and I don't have a compressor to get a pneumatic one on it

Pleeeeaaaase help meeee! I can't get the dang crank bolt off, so I can't get the lower timing cover off either. Is there, by chance, any way to change the timing belt without taking off the crank pulley and the lower timing cover? I have the old timing belt out - I just need to put the new one in.

Also - what if I cut the timing cover off? I know it would be a really bad idea to leave it with no timing cover, but I'm desperate. Could I get around the crank pulley and put the new belt on anyways?

Thanks for any help, guys.
Rick

In order to change the timing belt, you need to remove both upper and lower timing belt covers. The lower timing belt cover can only be removed (without damaging it) by pulling off the crank. The bolt should have been torqued at 80 ft-lbs, not that much?

An air powered impact wrench has never failed to remove the bolt. Do you know anyone with an air powered wrench and a compressor? You could loosen the bolt, then retighten it a little and drive back where you will do the work.

Are you turning the bolt the right way to remove it (CCW).

Toyota uses a special tool that attaches to the pulley hub and allows it to be held stationary. See link below for access to the service manuals.

The pulley has a couple holes in it to attach a bolt puller. You may need one to remove the pulley, don’t use a clamp puller as you may damage the pulley (it is a two piece setup). Pick up a couple of long metric bolts and screw them into the pulley holes, then wedge a bar between the bolts and the floor. Use a ½ inch drive socket and a large breaker bar. Keep in mind, after the belt change, the pulley bolt will need to be reinstalled.

Also, check out the related threads at the bottom of this page, others have had this same problem.

put the car in gear and drop the car on its wheels, just enough to where it touch the ground and enough for you to get a wrench under there. the car will move a bit at first but not by much. the tension from the engine being in gear and the wheels not moving should enough for you the get the bolt out. once its out, the pulley itself can be very hard to pull out due to rust/ heat and what not. just try getting the bolt out first.

The cordless impact such as Milwaukee 1/2 drive 18 volts was able to knock off the control arm to body bolts (155 lb-ft), just make sure you set the correct direction on the wrench.
Different method:
Obtain 5/16 in dia hardened dowel pins and stick one into the pulley hole instead of screwdriver. Then use crowbar/breaker bar.
I do not recommend jamming the flywheel or starter trick due to possible gear damage after that.

My 120VAC 200lb-ft electrical impact gun can't take it off. 500lb-ft air one took 5 sec.
