Question 83 Celica tranny question

Hey everyone, I test drove a car today. It was a 83 Celica GT while I was driving it the shifter was all over the place. It wasn't falling out of gear, but it felt like you could just push it anywhere in the gearbox. It felt weird, kinda like you were in neutral all the time. Anyone know why this is and how to fix it. The car was pretty cheap so I thought that if it wasn't to big of a deal I would fix it up. Thanx in advance.

Yeah, it feels like your shifting in a bucket of water. I hate that. The tranny is just well used. It's not very cheap to fix. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this have something to do with the syncros and/or linkage. Your best bet is to buy a new tranny for it. I wish I could be more help, even if the car is in good cosmetic shape don't pay more than $240.00.

there is a plastic button on the end of the shifter that is long gone, yota sells them, it moves the forks and when its gone the shifter will almost hit the dash

What do you mean by a button? I have never seen a button on a shifter except on automatics for overdrive or "power" button. Since i didn't specify it is a manual tranny, sorry if you thought it was a auto.

To blane, you think that the tranny is just wore out and need to be replaced? I would have thought that the gears wouldn't work like falling out or grinding not just loose all the time.
