4th Generation 92 Celica 2.2L swap.

Basically... I have a 92 Celica ST with the 1.6L 4AFE engine in it w/5speed.

Im thinkin about getting a 2.2L w/5speed to put in there instead. Im sorry if this has been asked before, but just wondering if its possible and how hard it would be? Just wondering if anyones tryed it?

thanks for any info, its appreciated.

It's not that hard to swap in the 2.2L Engine mounts won't match up so you'll need to fabricate new mounts and then you have to figure out the wiring which is the other half of the work. The 2.2L engine and transmission need to be swapped in.

The 2.2L is an economical engine and is a disappointment as far as hp gains go. My 2.2L convertable has had major problems with the engine and I personally don't have much faith in the 2.2L.

My 1992 st 1.6L white celica has 236,000miles and have had no engine issues at all.
My 1993 st had the $600.00 5afe engine swap done to it and it runs like a champ.

What are you trying to gain?

My 2.2L is a leaky son o' beotch. the oil pump went out once. The something seal broke and another and another. I think it's good now. But I don't have trust.

Where are you getting the 2.2L from?
Does that one have 220k miles on it?
What are you trying to gain from this swap?

For performance, the 4AGE series is going to give you more results for a similar, if not cheaper price.

I can take care of the wiring on any swap you want to do.

Well basically the engine I have now runs really good, 1.6L 4AFE engine, and theres no problems, no leaks, and I keep good service on it. Even with a suposid 250,000 miles.

Im just looking for some more power and I figured id have a better route going with the 2.2L engine? I really want to turbo it. I was lookin at my 1.6L and there doesnt look like much room to put a turbo there, while the 2.2L has hella room for a turbo.

Just tryin to make it fast basically. What do you guys think would be the best bet?

BEST bet is a 3SGTE swap.
It has more potential than any other swap [within reason].
Basically the same thing as swapping in a 5SFE.
It will cost more though....

But a 4AGE will work nice too.
More power than the 5SFE.

Isnt it the one with the all wheel drive tranny though? Or... does the regular 5 speed tranny bolt up to it?

in the celicas, yes, all wheel drive, but not in the MR2's, and it should bolt up AFAIK.

personally, i'd sell the car and buy one with a factory installed 2.2 in it. but that's just me.

Thats right huh because the MR2 has the engine mounted in the back so its just rear wheel drive. So the 3SGTE engine from a MR2 will fit in my celica and mount up to the front wheels?

The best thing for you to do is go with a 4agze swap from the 1st generation MR2's. You can swap out the supercharger in place of a turbo later on if you're not satisfied with the supercharger.

if you want a 2.2 in your celica i would say its not really worth it but can be done. you would need custom mounts. but the wiring would be easy just grab a wire harness from a celica with a 2.2 and your good.

haaving already the 4afe you could also go with
4age ore 4agze or one of the 4age 20valve engines.
wiring would be your biggest problems on those engines but ANY good mechanic or tuner shop can work that out with enough info. no need to go to an overpriced website or anything like that.

ask around at your local shops or trusted mechanics.

LOL!! The 2.2L is one of the most reliable engines for the celica, you just don't trust it because you don't keep it maintained.

When you swapped it you should have replaced all the seal that were leaky. lol

It's not worth swapping a 2.2L into an ST, plain and simple. 3sgte is the way to go. or build the 1.6, which can be done
