I know the GTS tranny has shorter gearing than the 3SFE one.

thats what i thot so too. shorter gearing. someone on the other forum said they use same tranny. i wouldnt be too happy with the 3sge having long gears... 3krpm at 80mph.. thats alittle too low for a 7k redline.

can someone also confirm.

The placement of the starter is totally different. the starter is on the exhaust manifold side and the manifold on the 3sge is designed to go over the starter, unlike in the 3sfe

Yeah, I think they got the same tranny code , maybe thats why people think they are the same. 3sfe = economy, 3sge = sport. Ask yourself why would they pair a sport engine with economy gearing? The previous owner of my camry had a 3sfe 5 spd with the 3sge, he said he would hit 135mph at 5k rpms. All I can tell you is, that is not normal for a stock GTS. My camry has the 3sge 5 spd on it now, but I have no way to test it out (the engine is knocking).

when i did my 3sgte swap I used the 96 Celica GT tranny instead (its very similar to the 3sfe tranny except a but smaller). my 3sge tranny was starting to grind so i just bought a new one, plus you cant use the 3sge tranny with 3sgte swap unless you cut a hole in the tranny housing to fit the started from the other side.

Use the 3sge engine/manifold and all ... It has both GTS engine and tranny ... The GTS tranny was put in after it had a 3sge in it.

yes i have a 3sfe transmission from a 91 camry in my 89 gt-s 3sge celica. the transmission you will need the camry transmission mounts and they will need a little bit of modifacation but yes they work. the starter is on the right side rather than the lefts side. the transmission has a built in oil pump where the 3sge one never did. and with the starter out of the way i was able to put headers on my 3sge off of a 3sge engine. the transmission isnt as quick off the start, i think because ive never drivin the car with the 3sge transmission in it . and power shifting is hard because the transmission really isnt meant for it
