Question 89 ST Fuel Pump Location

Good friend of mine has 89 ST. Suspect bad fuel pump. I advised him earlier that fuel pump is located in tank, he pulled tank and thier is no fuel pump located in the tanks. Any ideas.

There are two covers on the tank:
one for the gas level sender and another for the pump or pick-up tube.
Otherwice the pump is located under car under the left rear pass. seat .
It looks like cylinder 2 inches dia 6 inches long and attached to the frame rib by wide metal band.

Thanks for the information I will pass onto him today. This 89 is semi mint ocndition it just wasn't running well. He got for a couple hunderd dollars. A real great find.
