Engine replacement for 2000 Celica GT (auto)

I was just on the highway when my car started to make a really strange clicking/grinding sound. I pulled into a parking lot, then took it to my mechanic. Apparently there wasn't any oil in the engine. I put the mobile 1 5w30 15k mile full synth in around november. I had only 3700 miles on the car since that oil change.

Apparently there is a leak somewhere, and my car didn't let me know about it. Neither my check engine light or oil light came on at any point. So now I ask....

Should I do a swap to a more powerful engine? If so, which engines will be compatible with my already existing equipment?

Thanks in advance.

2ZZ engine (from GTS) perhaps ??? Yours came with the 1ZZ, if I ain't mistaken (Corolla motor) ... dunno how much you'd have to swap over (engine/ecu, for sure .... dunno if auto tranny can handle it, nor do I know if it'll work, as idon't know if it was even an option in '00... I could be wrong.I know the GTS came with a 6 speed manual). the GTS motor is a fine motor, but it needs to rev HIGH to get the powerband ("lift") ....fun, but gutless for everyday driving around town, imho. I'd stick with the same motor it came with. BTW, how could you NOT notice an engine full of oil disappearing in 3700 miles ??? Surely there'd be smoke (if burning) or quite a bit on the ground under the car's parking spot. Do you ever look where your car is parked ?? It's usually the first indicator (spotting) of any type of fluid leak (external)

There was minimal smoke coming from the exaust. I park the car in the same spot every day and never noticed any oil on the ground.

Ok, i'll stick with the stock engine, where can I get one for a reasonable price? I checked ebay and they were outrageous.

Generally speaking, how much should it be to replace just the engine?

ok i found one 120k miles 1200$ thats the cheap one your best buy in my opinion is 1300$
28k miles, needs intake (U GOT ONE). those are just the ones with prices listed. theres 3 times as much that say "call" in the price area. call around, thier all 1800 numbers. and talk them down because when you order a motor from texas or something you dont get to look at it first, use it to your advantage. if u dont feel comfortable, we could do a 3 way call. thier gona be pricey because its a forighn car, parts are worth more. its not like you need a ford 3.0 for your taraus, you can get a good one of those for 300 bucks. thats just how it is. keep in mind........a 1700 dollar motor is cheaper then a new car. i willbe glad to help you dude just let me know---Zac
