Gen5 3sgte celica gt4 knock

The knock i have happens in the morning and if i leave it sitting for an hour or so.

it was louder until i got rid of the cheaper filter and put a toyota one on. however still there so i might of already done the damage, or maybe my oil is too thin. (castrol magnatec 10w/40)

i have put a video up on youtube if you could have a listen and give me your ideas on what it could be, when it was loud it sounded like it was coming from the top.

The sound has been there for about a year now and its not any louder and does not seem to be getting worst.

its not the tapping sound but the one after that the knocking sound.

thanks guys

there are many reasons why an engine could make bad sounds. i wouldn't say that the oil is too thin cause i use Castrol RS and my engine sounds fine. the sound on the video is not very distinctive. the car should crank and fire better, there was too much cranking before the engine fired. there could be a problem with your timings that can easily make the engine knock. do the diagnostics on the sensors, short TE1 and E1 in the diagnostics port under the hood, turn the key, and count your check engine light flashes, specificially look if it will flash 52 or 53 (knock sensor). if it does there is definitely something wrong with the timings, 3s-gte tends to jump the timing belt (your car should run slower, maybe have bad exhaust). or there is a fault in the sensor and the ECU can't fix the timings. i'm most definitely certain that there is nothing wrong with engine mechanicals cause there would be an increase in loudness and sharpness of the sound.

ok i will do another diag, i did wonder if the knock sensor was a bit funny because i know they are easy to break, i will check the codes, i did reset the TPS sensor as per BGB which put the timing out but we put it back in, the idle now seems to be sweet.

will post back.

Thumbs up

go to autozone and buy a mechanics stethascope for 12 bucks.
if its in the top it could just need a valve lash adjustment, put it on the oil pan and see if it comes from below. thier a good investment.

Had a few people listen and they reckon its coming from under the rocker cover, like a cam bearing or lifter.

i think it might be a bearing as i have expressed in the video

here is a video
