dont mean to seem impatient i just really need help. i bought a 5afe for my celica st 91
some of the sensors and plugs dont match up ... do i just discard anything that doesn't fit on the new one? i have no idea ... anyone with info on it please post ... someone has to know something on here ...
also ... i know it sounds crazy but is there a way to modify a bench seat from a toyota truck into the celi? the seats are shot and i want something a little different.
perhaps the gt or gts but the st uses the 4afe 1.6l
sorry should have posted more info ... i'm swapping it out because of a thrown rod ... i've changed it out once from original 4afe to replacement 4afe but i could not find one for a reasonable price and settled for the 5afe ...
someone has done this swap i know ... anyhelp .. please?
and yes i've searched ... this is my last hope

ok so your swapping out one engine (4afe) for a different type of engine(5afe). if so, then you would need all the components from the new engine (like ecu, wire harness, sensors, etc). i pretty sure that this type of swap is NOT a direct plug and play swap.
i was told by the seller on ebay that its a direct swap ... although there is no emissions control on this engine. i'm assuming thats what the missing plugs and misc. stuff is for. i was told the only thing i needed was to swap the engine ... no computer no nothing ... all the major components mate up nicely ....
i've heard of others swapping it but they did not use detail when describing and i cant get in touch with them
well in that case, just strip that 5afe engine and transfer all the sensors and stuff from the old to the new. basically you want to use the engine only, nothing else from it.
one other thing ... some of the sensors on my 4afe do not exist on the 5afe ... there aren't even spots for them ... everything is the same theres just no hole
Basically only use the block and head from the 5A. Keep as much part from the 4A as possible. Take the sensor and whatever it attached to (intake manifold, throttle body, coolant neck etc) from the 4A.
All electrical parts should come from the 4A. Don't use any from the 5A unless you know for sure it'll work.
when he told me it had no emmisions control is that because of the missing sensors? will it have emmisions once i add the old parts? will my ocmputer act ok? will i get the same gas mileage? it'll pass inspection because pre 95 vehicles only get their gas caps checked .. i love louisiana .. now about that 5%tint ..lol
now by not quite right what do you mean? does it run? i know it's not the stock engine and i cant expect much but i swear if i have to drive to chicago and kill a little japanese man i'm gonna be pissed ...
i have a new problem ... i cant find a clutch alignment tool ... i have a fresh clutch so there is no need to replace it but the only way to get the tool is to buy the whole kit ... a little over budget ... i was told by a parts place that i could use a piece of wood (like a broom handle) and whittle one end down to fit in the crank .... he said all it needs to do is keep the clutch in place does it need the teeth on it? it's a 21 tooth 15/16 i beleive ..
I had my dad's mechanic do the 5afe swap on my car. I paid him this morning. $450 actually. I always by the entire clutch kit to change my clutch ($105 off of ebay). You should be able to buy a clutch alignment tool at any autoparts store. Maybe you could talk dirty to a clerk and he'll let you borrow one. I don't know much about clutches, sorry.
Yes my car runs freagin' awesome! No smoke! No Leaks! I'm excited. I think I'm good for another 100,000 miles. I was wrong about my car not being "quite right." They stole my distributor off the 4afe when I thought they needed it on the 5afe. I guess I'm wrong.
My car is kind of having the same problem. My gears are slipping, the car will rev when I hit the gas (In DRIVE) and after about a second it will jerk into gear. I would put more tranny fluid and it seemed to solve the problem for a couple of weeks but today it was freezing outisde and the jerking started up again. Does that sound like I need a new sensor?
PS. I could still use a quart or two of Transmission fluid.
If you are loosing transmission fluid you need to find out where it is going, if its not pooling under the car when you park it check the coolant in the radiator. If it has transmission fluid in it your radiator cooler is leaking and you either need to get a new radiator or new transmission cooler (external)
find out where that fluid is going before you kill that transmission

Oh man, that doesn't sound good. I changed my axles and I didn't have the axle quite in so when I put it in drive and hit the gas I lost atleast 8 quarts of tranny fluid. But that still doesn't explain why the problem stopped for a couple of weeks and started up again, unless the cold slows down the transmission for some reason??
