Bad Wheel Bearing on 89 GT??

I believe I have a bad wheel bearing but I wanted to make sure. What sound would a bad bearing make? The sound I'm getting is usually when I'm slowing down and it's a nice grinding noise. Sounds like metal on metal, but I don't know. Also, it usually only happens when I'm slowing down, but not necessarily when I'm pushing on the brake. Also, when the car shifts it kinda makes a clunking noise. I looked at the CV Joints and the boots are there and they look fine, but I haven't lifted the car to tell. Does this sound like a bad wheel bearing? If not, what is it? If so, how much would it cost me to replace, parts and labor?

Sorry, my mistake. It's actually a 91 Camry V-6. I'll post it in the Camry Forum. Thanks in advance, though, if you have some input!!

If your bearing case has broken it will make a nice grinding noise, and it will squeek while coasting. It's not too tough to check; just take the tire off, make sure the axle is fine and check the knuckle. If the bearing case is too badly damaged the bearings will actually fall out. Which is what happened to my car, then you just have to find the proper knuckle and install it, it's not too difficult.

As for price, you can't just buy the bearing case, you have to buy the entire knuckle. Make sure you have a 32 driver, and a jack, and after that all you have to buy is the knuckle. A knuckle can cost anywhere from 100$-200$ depending on if you go to a junkyard or buy it new.
