This might help a little.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/stepho/engcodes.htm#Crossmembers

The 4A-GE (or even better 4A-GZE) and 3S-GTE definitely fit because plenty of people have done it.
Unfortunately I don't have ready access to one to walk you through it.
Usually once you've made up a set of custom engine mounts, the rest is pretty easy.

Here in Australia we usually use a gearbox and bellhousing from a 1981-85 ST140 Corona (which has a 2S engine).
I think the engine crossmember is also a direct bolt in but I'd have to double check that the next time I go to a wrecking yard.

4AGE bigger than a 22R?? The 22R is a 2.4 liter and the 4AGE is a 1.6 liter. That's 800cc's of displacement. I hardly think an A-series engine would motivate your car to any great speed, as it will have to work hard to move a bigger car. Your best bet would be to modify the 22R with a hot cam and bigger exhaust, or even swap over to a 22R-TE (turbo).

Agreed, the 2400cc 22R (or turbo 22R-TE) would give him more grunt than an NA 1600cc 4A-GE.
A supercharged 4A-GZE would have similar grunt to the 22R but has the hassle of swapping engines.

A 2000cc 3S-GTE has the most grunt but of course also has the most complications. If I remember correctly, the US never got the ST140 Corona that you need to get most parts from (Australian wrecking yards are littered with the ST140).

The turbo 22R-T is probably the simplest performance upgrade (same mounts, gearbox, etc) but the stock 22R-T only has a small amount of boost (meant to be a truck motor, not a sports car motor).

If you want to go whole hog, the Lexus 1UZ V8 fits in.
Clearance for the exhaust manifold is a pain.
You will need to make custom engine mounts but that's not hard.
Not sure if the transmission tunnel is wide enough for the Lexus bellhousing.
I was halfway through this with a TA45 but stopped when it got complicated.
