I just was given a 1983 Celica with a R22-E motor with a stick 4-speed. I was wondering if the r22 was good or i should swap it for a better motor. It has just one rust spot in the quarter panel and it has been sitting under trees for a long time but the motor runs and it was rebuilt when it was parked. Any advice would be very helpfull.
also i would like to know where to get performace parts for it.

It's a decent motor. How much power do you want to make? The aftermarket isnt that big but it is out there for these motors. Just look around a bit. Make a cold air intake. It isn't hard at all. Go to a local speed shop and buy the universal coloered pipe and a 4" k&n cone filter. Even cheaper route is going to home depot and using dryer ducting with the cone filter. Pacesetter makes a header for the motor. Check out nopi.com and look at the e-catalog. Go to an exhaust shop and have them throw on 2 1/4 or maybe even 2 1\2" tubing with a high flow cat and get a universal muffler from one of the big companys. I prefer hks or apex'i. Ethier sounds real good. With these mods my 85 coupe is starting to move out. Sucks for me though. It's auto.

check out http://www.lcengineering.com for performance parts for any 20r, 22r, or 22re engines. they have quite a variety of parts..even whole engines if you want a straight swap.
thanks, i want to make it fast enough to beat my friends prelude. I was gonna do the cold air intake and the dual cat back exhaust, i was thinking about a turbo but i dont know if you have to trick the computer like new cars. And im new to the tuner stuff because my whole life i was a old school muscle car guy and i own a 1982 camaro but i was given this and i always wanted a little pocket rocket.
What year prelude? If it's a 92 or newer and stick good luck man. My friend had a 95 prelude si 5 speed. Only mods were cheap muffler, homemade air intake, clutch & flywheel. It kept up with my 5.0 stang when it was stock. For about $1500 you could get a cam, port the head, complete exhaust header back, and a clutch/flywheel. That should get your car movin.

If you're a muscle car guy, you will find the car really easy to work on. I have found that a fairly big cam (comp cams 268 in my case) and 2.25" exhaust will make the engine put out a lot more power, and that's just using the stock 4-2-1 22R cast exhaust manifold (but NOT the 4 into 1 type) and stock carb.
I wouldn't bother with porting and polishign the head unless you are also upgrading the cams and exhaust.
More value for money doing the cams and/or exhaust first.
I'd also keep the heater core.
No real advantage in removing it and it sure is nice on cold winter mornings.
Rust is our biggest problem because panels are getting so hard to find.
Likewise for trim.
