In the near future im looking at getting a new car, and I want to stick to Toyota's. Im either going for a Solara or Celica, but im leaning towards the Celica since it's a bit more sporty.
I was looking at a few GTS's from 2000-2003 or so, with the 6-spd manual, all with under 80K miles or so, for around $9K-$13K.
So basically, im just wondering if anyone here has the GTS, and if the 180HP engine and 6-spd tranny are pretty powerful. I've read some reviews and it looks like a sweet car, and is also almost 1000lbs lighter then my Camry, so im thinking that it will at least be on par with it, performance wise.
Are you planning to keep it stock or are you gonna mod it (engine wise)?
I like the look of celica, but power wise and mod friendly... dont think so..... I would go for it if I dont plan to mod it (engine wise) or if I have some extra $$. Plus aftermarket for celica isnt as many as eclipse, civic, or rsx.
Dont get me wrong, it's a nice car 'as-is', stockwise compare to competitions but if you want to mod it, you might want to keep this in mind =)
I would probably keep it stock, with the exception of an intake, maybe muffler, etc, nothing major. I'll look into the Eclipse and such, but I really like the way the Celica looks.

I hope your kidding about that because your typing incorrect info.

when I said not mod friendly, as far as I know, dollar per dollar, you would get more power with those cars I mentioned before (bolt-on wise). Performance, ast least, straight line wise and stock wise, eclipse (gtx), civic (si) and rsx (type S of course) faster. Plus, as far as I know, it's cheaper and easier to get aftermarket parts for those cars because these cars have larger crowds than celica (again, engine wise).
But again, I stand corrected.
when i mentioned civic and rsx, I always think about si and type-s , sorry for not making myself clear before ..... im thinking about 2 doors since celica is 2 doors and I can care less about stock rsx ^^;
Probably one of the best handling FWD cars ever built.
cant agree more with this one and since you want to keep it in toyota family then you might be better off buying celica. Just wanna to give you something to think about lol.
The Celica GT-S 2zzge engine is up on par with the performance numbers/times with those cars mentioned. Don't trust me? Feel free to looked them up from a reputable source.
Aftermarket parts are not cheaper or harder to find, they are basically the same.
If you are talking about the basic bolt ons they respond as well as the K series engine from Honda. And yes I knew or rather assumed you were talking about their faster counterparts.
I don't know where your getting your information from...
So with the GTS, they do have a bit of a market out there for aftermarket performance parts? Im sure they would have more then whats available for the Gen 3 Camry, lol
I'll check out some of the Celica forums and read up there.
But does around $10-$12K sound right for an 00-01 Celica GTS, with options, and with under 75K miles?

They have intakes, exhausts, cams, LSD, pistons, turbo kits, header, lots of body mods etc. Basically a lot more then the 3rd gen Camry. As for the price, location, the avaliable options, conditions also play a role so I am unsure of the asking price. But KBB and NADA should have the general overall pricing for them.
the celica GTS is an awesome car....great FWD handling, moderatly powerful, and a sick 6speed gearbox all with toyota reliablility....its a nice car, but the ride is firm like most sports cars, and the car sort of has an akward and low seating position....if you want the celica engine and tranny but with a softer ride and more room, look for a corolla XRS..eiter way, you wont be dissapointed

Exactly. Though, K20 can be modded to make more power overall than the 2ZZ naturally aspirated. It is not uncommon to see N/A K20 putting down 210 - 215 whp. The internals are very strong as well.
However, don't underestimate the modding potential of 2ZZ-GE. The extremely lightweight of 2ZZ works very well to it's advantage as opposed to much heavier K20 motor (hence the reason why Lotus picked 2ZZ-GE for good balance).
Celica GTS with intake/exhaust/PFC Lift tuning/flywheel/clutch/drag radials dyno over 190 whp (220 - 2225 HP at the crank) and are capable of running 13.8 - 14.0 (video was posted on TN a few months earlier against stock 350z).
Personally, with only intake/exhaust on my car and (dynos close to 172 whp), it ran a 14.9@96 mph at the dragstrip.
If you decide to get the Celica GTS, be sure to avoid the 2002 and 2005 (rev limited at only 7800 rpm).
2000 and 2001 will be the best two years since the throttle is cable so it will be easier to mod than the 2003+ Celica GTS that were drive-by-wire.
