I need some help from the 2001

Im actually asking this question because i think the dealership is trying to pull one over on someone. The complaint was a squeaky belt the celica was taken in and the new belt was put on. Squeaking went away. A month and a half later the squeaking has started again. Took the car back in and they said that the Tensioner is HYDRAULIC and that it is leaking slowly which is causing it to lose the tension on the belt and they want 350 dollars to repair it.

It is a 2001 celica.
So my question is, Is the tensioner actually hydraulic. I have never heard of that before. The car is not mine, It is a friend of mine.

My initial thought was perhaps the valve cover gasket has a slow leak and is slowly leaking onto the belt area causing the belts to soften up and squeal.

Thumbs up tensioner

Yes the tensioner is hydraulic. It has a small fluid filled damper to absorb shock and place preload on the belt. Usually they start toattle when they begin to leak and the belt may start slipping or even jump off.
