i have just purchased a 83 celica lift back and wanted to ask some questions about it. it cant be driven at the moment because of unijoints but have got that figured out. i am picking it up next week end

1 is the clutch meant to be realy soft?

2 is it meant to feel the same changing gears with the clutch when not using the clutch ?

The liftback is a little difficult to change but only becuase of it's sheer size.
But it's easy with 2 people.
Aligning the hinge bolts is important if you want it to shut properly.

All RWD Celica clutches I've used are heavy for a 4 cylinder (the same gearbox was used in 6 cylinder Toyotas) but much lighter than a typical V8 clutch.
Check for air bubbles in the clutch hydraulic line.

Pedal pushes the cluthc master cylinder, which pushes hydraulic fluid, which pushes the clutch slave cylinder will pushes teh clutch lever which pushes the actual clutch.

Look inthe engibe for the brake booster.
Now go towards the centre of the car and look for a similar reservior.
Check if the fluid is between the min and max marks.
Also check the brakes resovoir while your there.

Also look for a sharp smelling fluid under the carpet under the clutch pedal.
They master cylinder often leaks fluid onto the floor, which tells you that its seals are worn out.

Doh! I just saw your location, I'm in Perth too.
Contact me priavtely and we can arrange for you to bring it around to my place.
It looks like an SA63 Celica.
The 2S-C engine is an absolute dog.
Good news is that it can be swapped for a 3S-GTE with a modest bit of work.
Don't spend a single cent on the 2S engine.

I can't see a power steering pump.
If it has power steering then it should have PS at the end of the model code on the build plate in the engine bay.
Eg SA63-BCMSCQ PS
