A/C Question in Arizona

Alright here's the deal guys. My 92 celica gt (224k) is having a problem wit the a/c. The system wasn't working because of no freon (compressor not kicking on). I recharged it and once I put some freon into the system the compressor kicked on. Only problem is that the compressor turns off and the a/c light on the dash starts to blink, but it does blow cold. That was on day one. The next morning I turn it on and the system would not cool off, so I after some research I realize that one 18oz. can isn't enough for a completely empty system so I add more. This time the system stays on longer but still shuts off after about 10-15 minutes. Is this due to low pressure, an electrical problem (relay maybe), or compressor going bad? Also when the compressor is about to shut off the revs jump up a bit, not much maybe a couple hundred rpm. This is kinda annoying and sweating in Arizona just does not cut it during the summer. I need some help with this to get it fixed. Thank you in advance. System has already been converted also.

It sounds to me like you're leaking all the freon back out. You probably have a busted line somewhere.

Also, if the system is completely empty you will have to add compressor oil as well as freon, otherwise you will fry your compressor.

I'd either get a pump or take it to a lube shop that does AC maintenance (AC Tune-up, whatever they want to call it) and have them pump it dry and let you know if the system can hold a vacuum. If it can, you're golden...just refill it with a can of compressor oil then put freon in it until it stops taking it in. Probably a bit more than 2 cans after the oil.

If it doesn't hold a vacuum, it's time to start troubleshooting and figuring out where the hole is, be it in a hose, the condenser, the compressor, whatever, because that's where you're problem lies.

Edit: Also, you're not supposed to mix the new refrigerant with the old...so if you just put the conversion kit on and filled it up, that could be the problem. Have it sucked dry first.
